Apparently “Everyone Has a Bag” A first-time T-ball mom’s reality check about youth sports and surprise expenses.

I truly thought my 5-year-old would need a glove.

That’s it.

Shared helmets. Shared bats. Balls brought by the coaches. The kind of childhood sports setup I grew up with.

Instead, I downloaded the Game Changer app and quickly realized being a first-time T-ball mom in 2026 was much more than I anticipated.

Our First-Time T-ball Essentials

I’m a true millennial whose childhood coaches printed out the schedule on the first day of practice and handed it to us. Then WE had to bring it home and communicate with our families.

True accountability.

Now? Parents are fully at the wheel.

The group chat started vaguely with “come to practice,” but somehow I completely missed that we were going to need:

  • gray softball pants
  • a helmet
  • a bat
  • a glove
  • optional cleats
  • and apparently… a T-ball bag because, according to my husband, “everyone has a bag.”

Reality check.

I had no idea we were about to spend over $100 on equipment for a sport I didn’t even know if my daughter would like.

We already went all-in on soccer once. Cleats, gear, all of it. She hated it. Those cleats are now outgrown and collecting dust in her closet.

So this time, I decided to approach things differently. Or at least try to.

Because when you’re already juggling work, schedules, dinner, laundry, and life, suddenly needing an entire sports setup in three days feels overwhelming.

How We Tried to Save Money on T-ball Equipment

My first step was asking family members to keep an eye on the local Facebook Buy Nothing group we’re all part of.

Not necessarily for helmets (though my husband is a tree climber and knows a thing or two about cleaning helmets), but definitely for a bat at minimum.

Unfortunately, we were a little behind the 8-ball. People had already posted their old equipment and we missed the window.

I also somehow missed a 20% off Dick’s Sporting Goods coupon sent through our Little League emails.

At that point, I had to pivot.

Thankfully, after selling a few things on Poshmark, I had a balance sitting in my account. I ended up spending about $20 on a softball bag that was essentially already paid for through previous sales.

So technically?

Free.

As a working parent surviving a particularly busy season of life, I completely let the start date sneak up on me.

It was Wednesday night. T-ball started Saturday.

My husband was working nights and I had no realistic way to get to stores or coordinate pickups.

It takes a village, and I’m beyond lucky to have one.

The Glove

My mom picked up this glove from Target, and honestly, it worked out perfectly.

My daughter struggles with certain textures, but she was comfortable wearing this one immediately.

No arguments. No meltdowns.

Huge win.

The Helmet

The helmet was also from Target, but somehow arrived overnight by pure miracle.

I honestly thought she would hate wearing it, but now she puts it on every Saturday morning like it’s a baseball hat and wears it proudly to practice.

It’s not the fanciest or most expensive option, but it gets the job done.

Unfortunately our exact helmet is unavailable, but a similar Easton brand is linked.

The Bat

We ordered this bat from Dick’s Sporting Goods (not sponsored), but it’s not on Amazon. We linked a similar Amazon version in case your little one loves pink as much as mine does. If she keeps playing, we may invest in a second bat for her and her sister to share.

The color immediately sold her on both.

It’s the perfect size for her and she genuinely looks forward to using it every week.

And honestly? That alone made it worth it.

The T-ball Bag

The softball bag ended up being one of those purchases I didn’t even realize we needed until my husband casually informed me that “everyone has a bag.”

Apparently everyone did, in fact, have a bag.

Thankfully, I used Poshmark credits from previous sales, which made this feel much less painful financially.

Now everything stays in one place instead of rolling around the trunk of my car, so I have to admit… the bag is worth it.

What I’d Do Differently Next Time

A future upgrade: When my husband saw the bag I got on Poshmark, he said, “Everyone has a backpack bag.” I nearly died. Insert eye roll.

So, if she stays with t-ball, we will move on to this “backpack”: https://amzn.to/3PGfJXP

If I could do this all over again, I would start earlier.

Not the most groundbreaking realization, but it’s true.

I probably could have saved more money if I had started searching earlier through Buy Nothing groups, resale apps, and coupons instead of panic-ordering everything three days before the season started.

But honestly?

Grace not perfection.

Some seasons of life are busy and survival mode takes over a little. Not everything is perfectly optimized all the time.

Now I know for next season — and that’s enough.
