The $200 Shopping Trip That Saved My Teacher- Mom-Summer: Pool & Beach Essentials That Actually Worked

If I had to narrow it down, these are the few things I would immediately replace if I lost my pool bag tomorrow—but one of them makes everything the whole system work:

Labeled bag organizers — This is what keeps everything from turning into one giant mess. I’ve used these for years, and they’re the reason I can pack once and not have to rethink everything before every pool day. Each category has a place—snacks, clothes, pool things—and it makes getting out the door feel so much easier.

Then these are the rest of the items I rely on every single time:

I fill these the night before and just grab them on the way out the door—it completely changed our mornings.

These are the exact ones I use every single week in the summer:

These are the things that turned our pool days from chaotic to actually easy.

I work 50+ hours a week as a high school English teacher. My husband works a rotating shift schedule and capitalizes on overtime whenever possible–oh, and is a tree climber when he’s not at his “day” job. We have two small children– two girls, ages 2.5 and 5.

Last spring break, I had the chance to escape for a solo trip to Marshall’s in a two hour window before my husband left for work.

It. Was. Amazing.

I was shopping for the sake of browsing and having some quiet time. I walked in without any expectations and walked out with a shopping cart full of summer essentials.

As I walked up and down the aisles, summer was calling me. Teachers have up years and down years. Sometimes we feel like we could teach forever and never need a break. And sometimes we white-knuckle it to the weekends, holiday breaks, and the much-anticipated summer vacation.

I filled the cart with upcoming birthday presents for our nieces and nephews–lots of spring and summer babies in our family. That was a bonus of the trip. Prep now with more brainspace and less stress later.

I kept seeing summer essentials that we–somehow–did not own. I kept thinking this would make my life easier. We would use this every day

I fought the urge to buy, knowing we are on a budget and we have a very small house that is quickly filling up.

The thoughts kept nagging at me until I realized my brain was trying to tell me that it’s okay to set ourselves up for success. In this case, I really wanted to set my family up for a summer of easy, simple adventures and that required some purchases and prep. It’s okay to spend money when you know the value is there.

I made another lap around the store, this time tossing in the items that had made me pause the first time.

My cart was soon overflowing–top and bottom!– with summer essentials. As I walked to my car, one hand steering the cart and one hand holding on to toppling items, a woman walked by me and said, “It looks like you’re going to have a great summer.”

I didn’t know it then, but I do now: she was 100% right and some of the purchases I made that day made all the difference. My five-year-old’s anthem of June, July, and August:

“This is the best summer ever!”!

If I had to start over tomorrow, these are the exact things I’d buy again.

Everything We Bought (And Would Buy Again)
