The $200 Shopping Trip That Saved My Teacher- Mom-Summer: Pool & Beach Essentials That Actually Worked

This was not a random $200 shopping trip. These were the things that stopped me from repacking the pool bag, hunting for snacks, digging for goggles, and dragging tired kids through chaotic summer afternoons. Some of them were boring. Some were inexpensive. But together, they turned pool days into a repeatable system.

I’m not saying every family needs every item here. The point is not to buy more. The point is to stop rebuying, repacking, and rethinking the same things every single pool day.

The one thing I would rebuild first: the labeled pouch system.
This is what stopped the pool bag from becoming one giant pile of towels, snacks, goggles, and random kid things.

What I use it for:
Feed Me — snacks and quick food
Change Me — dry clothes and backup outfits
Dress Me — coverups, pajamas, or after-pool clothes
Entertain Me — small toys, coloring books, and quiet activities

Labeled bag organizers — This is what keeps everything from turning into one giant mess. I’ve used these for years, and they’re the reason I can pack once and not have to rethink everything before every pool day. Each category has a place—snacks, clothes, pool things—and it makes getting out the door feel so much easier.

Then these are the rest of the items I rely on every single time:

I fill these the night before and just grab them on the way out the door—it completely changed our mornings.

These are the exact things I use every single week in the summer:

If I had to rebuild our pool system from scratch, I would start with these:

1. Snackle boxes
I prep all our snacks the night before so I’m not scrambling at the pool — or spending money at the snack bar.

2. Giant beach/pool tote
This is what lets the whole system live in one place: towels, pouches, snacks, goggles, clothes, and the random things kids suddenly need.
Shop the giant tote

3. Picnic blanket
Easy to fold, easy to wash, and actually useful when we need a dry place to sit, eat, or reset.

4. Goggles
These are the only ones my sensory-sensitive daughter will actually keep on — no tears, no tangles.
Shop the goggles

5. Clarifying shampoo and conditioner
This is what helps us shower at the pool and go straight into the bedtime routine when we get home.
Shop the after-pool shampoo/conditioner

These are the things that turned our pool days from chaotic to actually easy.

I work 50+ hours a week as a high school English teacher. My husband works a rotating shift schedule and capitalizes on overtime whenever possible–oh, and is a tree climber when he’s not at his “day” job. We have two small children– two girls, ages 2.5 and 5.

Last spring break, I had the chance to escape for a solo trip to Marshall’s in a two hour window before my husband left for work.

It. Was. Amazing.

I was shopping for the sake of browsing and having some quiet time. I walked in without any expectations and walked out with a shopping cart full of summer essentials.

As I walked up and down the aisles, summer was calling me. Teachers have up years and down years. Sometimes we feel like we could teach forever and never need a break. And sometimes we white-knuckle it to the weekends, holiday breaks, and the much-anticipated summer vacation.

I filled the cart with upcoming birthday presents for our nieces and nephews–lots of spring and summer babies in our family. That was a bonus of the trip. Prep now with more brainspace and less stress later.

I kept seeing summer essentials that we–somehow–did not own. I kept thinking this would make my life easier. We would use this every day

I fought the urge to buy, knowing we are on a budget and we have a very small house that is quickly filling up.

The thoughts kept nagging at me until I realized my brain was trying to tell me that it’s okay to set ourselves up for success. In this case, I really wanted to set my family up for a summer of easy, simple adventures and that required some purchases and prep. It’s okay to spend money when you know the value is there.

I made another lap around the store, this time tossing in the items that had made me pause the first time.

My cart was soon overflowing–top and bottom!– with summer essentials. As I walked to my car, one hand steering the cart and one hand holding on to toppling items, a woman walked by me and said, “It looks like you’re going to have a great summer.”

I didn’t know it then, but I do now: she was 100% right and some of the purchases I made that day made all the difference. My five-year-old’s anthem of June, July, and August:

“This is the best summer ever!”!

Before this system, the pool bag was technically packed, but it was not functional. Snacks were loose. Goggles were buried. Dry clothes somehow ended up under wet towels. I would pack everything, repack everything, and still feel like I was missing something.

This worked because every category finally had a home.

If I had to start over tomorrow, these are the exact things I’d buy again.

The Kid Items That Were Worth Rebuying

The After-Pool Things I Wish I Had Packed Sooner

The after-pool items are not glamorous, but they are what make the ride home and bedtime smoother. If we can rinse, detangle, change, and contain the wet things before getting home, the whole night goes better.

If pool days have ever felt harder than they should, it’s probably not you—you just don’t have a system yet.

Update after using this system: These are still the things I would buy again. The snackle boxes, labeled pouches, giant tote, goggles, and pool toys are the items that have actually stayed in rotation — not just the things that looked useful in the store.

If pool days feel chaotic, it’s not you—you just need a system.
