What I Pack the Night Before for Pool Days (So Mornings Feel Easy with Kids)

What I Pack the Night Before for Pool Days (So I’m Not Scrambling the Next Morning)

One of the best systems I use over the summer is exactly the same as my school night routine: prepping the night before.

This simple habit gives me slower, quieter mornings—hot coffee in the backyard before my daughters wake up—before we’re off to a day of swimming and summer fun.

If I had to narrow it down to the two items that make this whole system work, it’s:

The Night-Before Reset That Makes Everything Work

This is the part that changes everything.

I spend about 20 minutes each night resetting everything so the next day feels easy instead of rushed.

Resetting the Pool Bag

Every night, I quickly reset our pool bag so it’s ready to grab and go the next day.

I take everything out and restock what we used:

There are also a few things that just live in the bag all summer:

  • shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
  • hair brush and hair cream
  • a small “care bag” with bandaids, Neosporin, Advil, lip balm, and hair ties

Once this is done, I don’t have to think about it again in the morning.

If you want to see everything I keep stocked in our bag, I shared the full list in my

Packing the Snackle Boxes (The One Thing I Never Skip)

This is the part I never skip.

I prep our snackle boxes the night before so I’m not scrambling in the morning—and so we’re not spending money at the pool snack bar.

We use two:

One for cold items:

  • fresh fruit and cut vegetables
  • cheese
  • yogurt pouches (I freeze them overnight so they stay cold longer)

One for dry snacks:

  • chips, crackers, cookies
  • I remove the small containers and use the box itself so everything stays organized and doesn’t get crushed in the cooler.

I also started making sure I packed food for myself:

  • small salads
  • yogurt
  • protein shakes
  • extra fruit and vegetables

Extra tip: And one small thing that helps more than I expected… I keep a stack of plastic cups in the bag so I can portion snacks easily during swim breaks—no spills, no crushed bags, and way easier than Ziplocs. I can’t take credit! I saw another mom at the pool do this and I thought: that is genius. So now, I share with you!

The snackle box is also the thing I get stopped for the most.

Other moms at the pool ask me about these all the time—especially when they see the fresh food and how easy it is to grab snacks during swim breaks. It’s such a simple system, but it means I’m not spending $20 at a time on snack bar food, and my girls aren’t leaving the pool starving while I’m trying to unpack everything at home.

And honestly, this matters even more because my husband works a lot over the summer—so most days, it’s just me managing everything at the pool. I need things to be easy, accessible, and already done, or the whole day feels overwhelming.

While I’m doing all of this, I throw the towels and bathing suits in the wash so they’re ready to go again the next day.

What Our Mornings Feel Like Now

Because everything is prepped the night before, mornings feel completely different.

I can sit outside with a hot cup of coffee before the girls wake up, knowing everything is already done.

Then it’s just:

  • finishing any laundry if needed
  • putting the snackle boxes into the cooler with ice packs
  • filling my Stanley and the girls’ water bottles
  • getting everyone dressed and fed

And we’re out the door in about 15 minutes.

How We Actually Get Everything to the Pool

Last summer, this system worked so well because everything had a place.

Our double stroller made it even easier.

One of my daughters would sit while the other walked next to me, and I used the stroller to carry everything:

  • Bogg bag on the seat
  • cooler stacked on top
  • pool toys in the storage basket underneath

The Little Break That Makes the Whole Day Easier

One small thing I started doing last summer made a bigger difference than I expected.

I always keep a book in my Bogg bag—but I only read when the girls are out of the pool and taking a break. Never while they’re swimming.

When they’re ready for a snack or a reset, I’ll set up a quick little spot for them using beach towels over the pool chairs—almost like a little fort.

Sometimes they sit there before going back in, and sometimes they wait until after they’ve showered. I always bring a clean beach blanket so they have somewhere dry and comfortable to sit.

Post-pool-shower fort and coloring time = priceless memories and mom-reset time.

I also keep a small “entertain me” bag with coloring books, crayons, or little crafts so they can relax for a bit.

And during that time, I can actually sit and read for 30–45 minutes.

After a long day of swim lessons and watching the girls in the pool, it feels like a complete reset.

The Quick Reset That Keeps It Going

When we get home:

  • towels and bathing suits go straight on the fence to dry
  • the girls relax or nap
  • leftover snackle box food becomes afternoon snack or even part of dinner

Then that night, I reset everything again—and the next day is just as easy.

The System That Makes Summer Feel Easier

This system isn’t complicated.

But it’s the reason our summer days feel calm instead of chaotic.

It’s just a few things done ahead of time that make everything else easier.

If you’re trying to simplify your days with kids this summer, this is the one thing I would start with.
